justification: One might say that a shield is not ninja-y but than again neither is a kid wearing an orange jump suit shouting at the top of his lungs. Also while Japan was never influenced by the Hellenistic era's shield use that is not to say that Japanese foot soldiers never used shields. Plus it fits the fighting style.
